WA-Net holds Workshop on the effects of Climate Change on Water Resources Management in Nigeria

The Regional Training Workshop was held at Nela’s Hotel 164 M/M Highway, Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria from 18th – 20th April, 2018.

The purpose of the Training Workshop was to create awareness and strengthen the capacity of the participants on impacts of Climate Change on Water Resources Management in Nigeria. The Workshop served as an avenue for bringing together about 85 Scientists, Engineers, Environmentalists and other stakeholders in the sector to discuss, brainstorm and share experience on impacts of climate change on water resources in Nigeria as it affects each catchment area with a view to proffering pragmatic solutions to the challenges.

The workshop was declared open by the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR), ably represented by Mr.Babarinde S.M. (Deputy Director/Head Climate Change Unit, FMWR). Who was unavoidably absent but mandated the Rep. of MD Cross River Basin Development Authority Calabar Mr. Bassey O. Ekpo Deputy Director Hydro-geology (CRBDA),Who declared the workshop open and gave the opening Remark.

Other dignitaries that attended the event include Mr. Okon Ita Director Water Supply and Quality Control, Ministry of water resources Calabar, Mr. Ima S. Hogom Deputy Director Hydrology (CRBDA), Andy Akpotu Adeshi Director Relief and Rehabilitation Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CRSEMA) and also present were Representative of Ministry of Climate Change and Forestry, Cross River Njah Iyamba (Director), Ms. Adie Clement Representative of Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET),Cross River State Ministry of Water Resources, and officials of other State Agencies etc.The Resource Persons were drawn from the Academia, Private Sector, Retired Civil Servants and WA-Net represented by the Wa-Net Manger, Dr. Martin O. Eduvie of the National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna Nigeria.

Goodwill messages were received from various stakeholders including MDAs, Academia and NGOs etc.

At the Technical sessions, presentations were made by various professionals on the “Effects of Climate Change on Water Resources Management in Nigeria and the way forward”.
